Police arrest newlywed groom, friends over bride’s death in Jigawa

The Jigawa Police Command has arrested four suspects, including a newly married groom, following the death of his wife in Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area of the state.

SolaceBase reports that the development was disclosed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, on Sunday.

It stated that the incident occurred on Saturday night, when the Divisional Police Officer of Sule Tankarkar Division launched an investigation into allegations involving the groom and his friends.

According to preliminary findings, the groom, identified as Auwal Abdulwahab, 20, allegedly conspired with three of his friends — Nura Basiru, 20, Muttaka Lawan, 20, and Hamisu Musa, 20, all of Tungo Village in Albasu District — to coerce his bride into non-consensual sexual activity.

PROMISES-DELIVERED

During the attempt, the bride, who had reportedly disagreed with her husband over marital relations since their wedding, raised an alarm and tragically died in the process.

Upon receiving the report, a team of policemen led by the DPO rushed to the scene and evacuated the body to Gumel General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death. Her remains were later released to her family for burial.

The statement added that the suspects could face charges including criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

It further noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for discreet investigation.

The suspects will be prosecuted accordingly upon the conclusion of the investigations.
