Police bust tricycle theft syndicate in Kano, recover eight vehicles
The Kano State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of a tricycle theft syndicate and recovered eight stolen tricycles in the state.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on Wednesday, the command said the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation by officers attached to the Kwakwachi Police Division.
According to the statement, the breakthrough came on March 26, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., when police officers on surveillance patrol along Airport Road in Kano intercepted a suspect, Abubakar Sidi of Kunkumi Village in Kaduna State, riding a tricycle with registration number NSR 85 WD and KAROTA number KMC 1084.
SolaceBase reports that the police said the suspect was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the ownership of the tricycle, prompting officers to transfer the case to the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the directive of the Commissioner of Police for further investigation.
Investigators later discovered that the suspect had allegedly deceived the tricycle owner along Emir Palace Road in Kano before conspiring with other members of the syndicate to steal the vehicle.

Police said two additional suspects, Abba Babura and Babangida Haruna, were subsequently arrested during the investigation.
The statement noted that further findings led to the recovery of seven additional tricycles stolen by the suspects and sold in Babura, Jigawa State.

“The suspect had deceived the tricycle owner at Emir Palace Road, Kano, and conspired with his syndicate members to rob the tricycle,” the statement said.
The command urged members of the public, particularly tricycle operators, to remain vigilant when interacting with passengers.

It warned operators against accepting drinks or gifts from strangers and encouraged residents to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
Police also called on individuals whose tricycles may have been stolen using a similar method to check the recovered vehicles and report to the Police Public Relations Office at the Bompai Police Headquarters in Kano, or contact the investigating officer through the phone number provided.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the officers involved in the operation, assuring residents of the command’s continued commitment to tackling crime and ensuring public safety across the state.
