‘’Politics should be about nation’s building , not character assasination”-Tanko Yakasai

An Elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has called on Nigerian politicians to refrain from engaging in dirty politics and using abusive language that could incite division and threaten the country’s peaceful coexistence.

Yakasai made the appeal during an exclusive interview with SolaceBase at his residence in Kano.

He emphasised that politics should not be seen as a do-or-die affair but rather as a platform to promote national unity and contribute to the country’s development.

“Politics should be about building the nation and contributing ideas that will move Nigeria forward. I have been involved in politics since the First Republic. Although I am no longer active, I grant interviews to journalists to share our experiences so that the younger generation can learn from our wisdom,” he stated.

Yakasai expressed concern over the growing trend of politicians using media platforms to promote division and bad conduct, especially during political programs.

“I feel sad when I hear how some politicians now use media houses to spread abusive language in the name of political programs. This trend must not be encouraged. That is why I am using this opportunity to urge journalists to stop giving such individuals airtime. Stop interviewing them. If you refuse to be their mouthpiece, it will help reduce this negative behavior,” he said.

He further warned that if media platforms become tools for promoting immorality and political thuggery, they risk losing respect from responsible members of society.

“During our time in politics, political thugs had no access to the media. Only credible politicians were given the platform to share their ideologies. We didn’t see anything like what is happening today. I know some are doing it for money, but it is wrong,” he said.

Yakasai noted that in the past, political campaigns were not driven by money, and party supporters willingly contributed funds without expecting personal gains. The reward, he said, was good governance and leadership if the party won.

He urged present day’s politicians to emulate the values and discipline of the country’s founding fathers and political elders if they truly want to succeed in serving the people.

Alhaji Tanko Yakasai is a veteran Nigerian politician, statesman, and nationalist who has played a prominent role in the country’s political development for over six decades.

He was a commissioner in Kano State under the military regime of Audu Bako as the state governor.

Alhaji Yakasai was also, Special Assistant on National Assembly Liaison to President Shehu Shagari during the Second Republic and a founding member of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF).

He was a close associate of Nigeria’s first republic leaders and served in various national capacities, including as Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters to President Shehu Shagari in the Second Republic.

Known for his outspoken views and commitment to democratic values, Yakasai has been a consistent advocate for unity, good governance, and national development.

Over the years, he has remained a vocal figure on issues affecting Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly concerning constitutional reforms, democracy, and inclusivity.

Although no longer active in partisan politics, Yakasai continues to contribute through mentorship, public commentary, and advocacy for policies aimed at national progress.
