Presently there is no Emir in Kano– House Majority Leader

The Kano State House of Assembly has repealed the law that established five new emirates in the state.

According to Lawal Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, this decision means that there is currently no emir in Kano State.

The Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, initially enacted to create multiple emirates, has now been overturned. “This bill, in its entirety, has abrogated the establishment of the five new emirates and reverted to the traditional system of a single emir, a structure that has been in place since the Jihad of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio,” Lawal Hussaini stated.

The new bill empowers the governor to appoint a new emir by inviting the kingmakers to nominate a candidate. “With the abolishment of the additional emirates, there is no current emir in Kano. It is now up to the governor to decide when to appoint a new one, as per the provisions of the new bill,” Lawal Hussaini explained.

This legislative change aims to restore unity in Kano, which, according to the lawmaker, was disrupted by the creation of multiple emirates. “The establishment of multiple emirates only created divisions among the people of Kano. We are now returning to our historical roots of ‘one Kano, one people, one Emir,’ and we hope this will foster greater unity and cooperation among the citizens,” he added.

Lawal Hussaini, who sponsored the motion to repeal the law, emphasized the importance of public support for this transition. “We expect cooperation from the people of Kano. This is a welcome development, and we urge everyone to join us in working towards the peace and development of our great state,” he said.

The previous law, signed by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on December 5, 2019, created four additional emirates and subsequently led to the dethronement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano. With the recent repeal, Kano State returns to its long-standing tradition of a single emirate, awaiting the governor’s next steps to appoint a new leader.
