PWDs renew calls for establishment of disability commission in Kano
People with disabilities (PWDs) in Kano State have reiterated their call for the establishment of a disability commission to cater for their needs.
SolaceBase reports that they lamented that despite multiple assurances from governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, before and after the election, the commission has yet to materialize, leaving PWDs frustrated over the delay.
In view of this, the Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO), in collaboration with disability rights groups in Kano, organized a roundtable discussion to strategize on ensuring the commission’s actualization.
Speaking at the event, the head of the PWDs unit in VSO, Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, emphasized the need for them to keep pushing until government do the needful.
“We organized this discussion to develop new approaches in advocating for the commission. We are doing everything possible to ensure that the government take necessary actions.”

The Pioneer Chairman of the Spinal Cord Injuries Association Abdul Danladi Haruna underscored the significance of the commission, stressing that it should be led by people with disabilities themselves.
He highlighted its role in enforcing existing laws, raising awareness, and addressing critical issues such as education, healthcare, employment, and accessibility to public spaces.
Director of Social Welfare, Kano Ministry of Women, Children, and People with Disabilities, Binta Muhammad Yakasai, reassured the PWDs that the government is actively working to establish the commission.
“We recognize the importance of this commission, and we are committed to making it a reality.”
‘’When established, the commission is expected to be a game-changer, ensuring that people with disabilities have equal opportunities in education, healthcare, employment, and public infrastructure, the forum added.
