‘Sexual Harassment’: Kano assaulted lecturer speaks on viral video, police investigate
A senior lecturer at Northwest University Kano, Dr Nisa’i Gwadabe, has denied allegations of attempting to engage in an extramarital affair and sexually harass a married female student, insisting that he was deliberately set up by the woman and her husband.
SolaceBase reports that the controversy followed the circulation of a viral video on social media showing the lecturer being beaten and publicly humiliated by some individuals over allegations that he was trying to have an affair with the married woman, a student at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), where Dr Nisa’i Gwadabe served as a visiting lecturer.
The assault was reported to have occurred at Bayero University.
Speaking to journalists, Dr Gwadabe maintained that he had no illicit relationship with the woman, explaining that she had contacted him to seek guidance on her academic project.
According to him, he agreed to meet her in good faith to discuss the project, unaware that she and her husband had allegedly conspired to lure him into a trap.
“I agreed to meet her with the genuine intention of discussing her project. Unknown to me, she and her husband had planned to set me up and humiliate me,” he said.
The lecturer disclosed that he immediately reported the incident to the police, adding that they invited both the woman and her husband for questioning.
He urged the public to refrain from passing judgment until the police conclude their investigation, expressing confidence that the facts would establish his innocence.
Meanwhile, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria said Dr Gwadabe is no longer a member of its academic staff.
The university clarified that his contract as a visiting lecturer had expired and was not renewed, stressing that he was no longer in its employment.
Also reacting to the development, Northwest University Kano said it had taken note of the allegations circulating on social media and would investigate the matter in line with its internal procedures before taking any appropriate action.
The incident has continued to generate widespread reactions on social media, with many calling for a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
