Shekarau @70: My life is in extra time, i’m ready for the final whistle

Former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, celebrated his 70th birthday on Wednesday with reflections on a life filled with lessons, struggles, and gratitude, describing himself as living in the “extra time” of life.

Shekarau, a former education minister, made this known during a media interactive session with newsmen in Kano, to illustrate the stage of life he has entered.

“My life is in extra time, and I’m ready for the final whistle, at 70, anything beyond this is a gift from Allah, and I remain grateful for every moment.”

He expressed profound gratitude to Almighty Allah for sustaining his life and guiding his journey through education, leadership, and service to others.

“My first gratitude is to Almighty Allah who has graciously spared my life through all that I have achieved,” he said. “I also thank my parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues who have supported me along the way. Their guidance has shaped the person I am today.”

Shekarau shared the principles that have guided him through life: good conduct, hard work, perseverance, patience, and complete reliance on God.

“The beauty of life is not in how happy you are, but how happy others are because of you. Serving humanity has always been my true measure of success,” he said, emphasizing the importance of helping others and living a life of purpose.

Reflecting on the challenges and lessons of the past seven decades, Shekarau spoke about forgiveness, resilience, and the role of faith in navigating life’s trials.

“I have forgiven all who may have wronged me, and I seek forgiveness from anyone I may have offended. At this stage of life, entering extra time, the referee can blow the final whistle anytime, but I remain grateful for every lesson,” he concluded.
