Some lawmakers don’t know contents of tax reform bills – Says Barau

Following the recent Senate session on Wednesday, where experts were invited to clarify President Bola Tinubu’s new tax policies, Senator Barau Jibrin has addressed concerns raised by some lawmakers and the public about the session.

Senator Barau in an interview with BBC explained that the President introduced these policies with the aim of strengthening our economy, but their complexity required lawmakers to seek expert input for proper understanding.

“This is why we invited those who developed the policies on behalf of Mr. President.”

The Finance Committee, led by Senator Sani Musa, had advised that these experts be brought in to shed light on the policies, as many legislators and citizens lacked full awareness of their details.

“Some of these experts had previously been invited by state governors and members of the House of Representatives for similar explanations. We saw it as a necessary step,” Barau added.

He further clarified why the session was televised. “Transparency was key, which is why we ensured the session was broadcast live.

“However, despite notifying all relevant stakeholders through our official platform, some senators claimed they were unaware of the meeting,” Barau said.

The senator dismissed the notion that the second reading of the tax policies signals their final approval.

“This is just the beginning of the process. At this stage, the Finance Committee will review the policies in detail, consult with tax experts, and provide a comprehensive report.

“Stakeholders, including youth and women, should continue to document their concerns,” he noted.

Barau emphasized that no leader intends to harm their people but stressed the importance of fully understanding the policies’ implications.

“Even some representatives may not yet grasp the full impact. That’s why thorough review and consultation are critical,” he stated.

Addressing recent political tensions, Barau highlighted an incident in Kano where rice was seized, leading to hasty accusations.

“Such actions undermine due process. Jumping to conclusions without proper investigation does not help our country,” he warned.

He also called for unity and respectful discourse in the Senate.

“Collaboration is essential, even across party lines. Resorting to insults and accusations contradicts our cultural and religious values. Even God does not condone such behavior,” Barau said.

As the Senate continues its review, Barau urged patience and constructive engagement from all stakeholders to ensure the policies serve the best interests of Nigerians.
