SSCE: Jigawa Govt. approves N23m for extra- coaching of final year students

The Jigawa Government has approved over N23 million for coaching of students who registered for the 2024 Senior Schools Certificate Examinations (SSCE) in the state.

Dr Abbas Abubakar, the Executive Secretary, Jigawa State Agency for Mass Education, made this known when he addressed the facilitators, coordinators, and monitoring teams of the exercise in Dutse. 

Abubakar said a total of 37,037 final-year students in the state will benefit from the exercise in Mathematics and English language. 

He explained that the exercise was initiated by former governor of the state, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar in 2019 to enable the students to pass their Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) with good grades.

The executive secretary added that the extra coaching would start two months before the commence of the SSCE by both the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO).

“It is important to note that this special extra coaching of SS3 final year students in Mathematics and English language across the senior secondary schools in the state is in line with the 12-point Agenda of Gov Umar Namadi. 

“Indeed, it was initiated by the former governor during his regular meeting with the education sector in 2028 where he directed that it should conducted annually because of its importance. 

“The agency for mass education was mandated to plan and conduct the program through its remediation approach. And from 2019 to 2023 with the introduction of the extra coaching, the performance of the students in both WAEC and NECO, especially in Mathematics and English language has improved,” the executive secretary said. 

According to him, 365 facilitators for English language, 365 for mathematics, 204 coordinators and 197 monitoring teams were expected to participate in the program in order to ensure its successful implementation. 

“And I’m happy to inform you all that Gov Umar Namadi has approved the conduct of this year’s extra coaching and released the sum of N23,317,400 to conduct the program accordingly.

“Today therefore marked the sixth extra coaching in favour of SS3 final-year students for the year 2024,” Abba said.

Abbas expressed the hope that the gesture will enable the beneficiaries to get the required credit for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions across the country. 

He further pointed called on the stakeholders in the extra coaching to justify the confidence reposed on them by doing what is expected from them. 

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Yusuf Chamo, reiterated the resolve of the state government to continue to initiate policies that will enhance the development of education.

Chamo added that the extra coaching will go along in assisting the students pass with good grades in the two core subjects being the major requirements to gain admission into tertiary institutions. 

He therefore urged the facilitators, coordinators, and monitoring teams for the exercise to work hard in order to achieve better performance, especially in the two core subjects.
