President Bola Tinubu has appointed a former Nasarawa State Governor as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the official launch of an ICT Development Project supported by the French Development Agency (AFD) in 10 Nigerian universities.
Al-Makura, a seasoned politician and businessman, brings with him a track record of infrastructure and education development from his tenure as governor of Nasarawa State.

UBEC, which operates under the Federal Ministry of Education, is responsible for coordinating the release of counterpart funds to states and driving the implementation of basic education programs across Nigeria. Al-Makura’s appointment is expected to inject new momentum into the Commission’s efforts to improve access to quality basic education nationwide.
The federal government has emphasized the importance of strengthening foundational education as a key pillar for national development, and Al-Makura’s leadership is seen as a strategic move in that direction.
