Tree felling contributes to severe heat in Kano – ACReSAL

By Uzair Adam

The Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) has associated the current issue of global warming impended by climate change with the incessant felling of trees in Kano state and beyond.

Dr. Dahir M. Hasim, the ACReSAL Project coordinator in Kano, said climate change takes place as a result of human activity, which completely alters the known temperature of various places in the world, including Kano.

Dr. Hashim disclosed this on Thursday on a Freedom Radio program, Barka da Hantsi, monitored by SolaceBase.

He highlighted the implications of deforestation, adding that the development affects not only human lives but also the land on which the trees are planted.

“People naturally produce carbon dioxide while plants use photosynthesis to capture it and then release half of it into the atmosphere through respiration. So, when there are no trees to capture it, it will lead to a global warming,” he said.

The ACReSAL Project Coordinator unveiled a commitment towards policy formulation that will stop people from unnecessary felling of trees in Kano state because of the implications surrounding the activity on human lives.

According to him, ‘’We will  ensure the provision of solar cooking stoves so that people will refrain from cutting down trees unnecessarily, thereby discouraging use of firewood.’’

“We will provide monitoring and evaluation policies to ensure that the planted trees in the state are properly protected in such a way that before a person fell a tree, he needs to write a letter seeking for permission, ‘’ he added.

He also commended the unwavering commitment of the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, in making Kano green by planting timbers in the state to help address the dangers associated with deforestation.

It could recalled that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, recently launched the 2024 tree planting campaign by Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) in the state.

Speaking shortly after planting at the state Government House, Governor Yusuf stressed the importance of tree planting considering the climatic conditions, which are leading to unpredictable weather conditions.
