Two killed as hoodlums attack residents, loot shops, destroy property in Kano

Over 100 hoodlums allegedly broke into more than five shops at Zango, Kofar Mata, Yakasai and Rimi communities in Kano metropolis, vandalized vehicles, and stole residents’ property during a violent clash.

According to residents, the violence began on Sunday evening after a football match between Kano Pillars and Katsina United at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

SolaceBase gathered that two persons were killed during the incident.

Halifah Auwal, a phone charging business operator in Zango area, narrated his ordeal to SolaceBase on Monday.

He said the hoodlums broke into his shop and stole over 40 phones that customers had left for charging.

“Earlier today, while running my business in my shop, unknown hoodlums attacked me. I narrowly escaped. These criminals stole over 40 cell phones, a computer, and my solar battery,” Auwal lamented.

“As I speak to you now, people who are unaware of the attack are accusing me of negligence regarding their phones. I don’t even know where to start explaining,” he added.

The hoodlums also attacked a mosque, disrupting prayer sessions and destroyed three water tanks meant for ablution.

Another victim, Musa Muhammad, a fruit vendor, said the hoodlums stole his motorbike, which he relied on for transportation.

“While I was busy with my business, these hoodlums attacked me and took my motorbike. This machine was my lifeline for commuting between my house and this market,” Muhammad explained.

Muhammad Rabi’u, the head of Zango in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, confirmed the incident. He told SolaceBase that the violence erupted after the football match and blamed the hoodlums, whom he claimed were not from the community.

“The hoodlums are outsiders who formed a gang to attack people and steal belongings. As community leaders, we always advise our youth to avoid engaging with them to prevent bloodshed,” Rabi’u said.

He criticized the government for failing to address recurring violence during football matches in the area.

“It has become a common occurrence for hoodlums to gather and attack people whenever there is a football match at the Sani Abacha Stadium. The government must wake up and address this issue,” he stressed.

The Commissioner of Police in Kano, Salman Dogo Garba,on Monday visited the scene and ordered a thorough investigation to ensure the hoodlums are brought to justice.

Speaking to SolaceBase on the situation, Kano Police spokesman SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed that two persons died during the attack.

Kiyawa said the commissioner of police on Monday evening had a meeting with stakeholders from Kofar Mata to avert recurrence of the situation.

He noted that the commissioner has directed a full investigation into the incident.
