Two policemen injure, wanted robbery suspect killed in Kano

A notorious armed robbery suspect, Halifa Baba-Beru, has been confirmed dead following a battle with operatives of the Kano State Police Command at Gwammaja Quarters, Dala Local Government Area of Kano State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the police responded to a distress call at about 1:00 p.m. on April 22, alerting them to an ongoing robbery operation allegedly led by Baba-Beru.

SolaceBase reports that the gang, reportedly armed with dangerous weapons, was said to be terrorising residents in the area.

According to the statement, upon arrival at the scene, the police team was met with violent resistance, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. Two officers, Corporal Abdullahi Ibrahim and Sergeant/Cadet Yahaya Saidu, sustained injuries in the confrontation. Baba-Beru was also critically wounded during the shootout.

“All injured parties were swiftly taken to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital,” Kiyawa stated. “While the officers received treatment and were later discharged, the suspect succumbed to his injuries while undergoing medical care.”

The Police Command has since launched a full-scale investigation and is intensifying efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the criminal syndicate. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, assured residents that justice will be served.

“We commend the courage and professionalism of our officers during the operation,” the statement read. “The Command remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kano State.”

The Commissioner also appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities or provide information that could aid in the arrest of the fleeing suspects.

“Community support is vital in the fight against crime,” CP Bakori added. “Together, we can build a safer Kano.”
