UNILORIN honours Nureini Jimoh SAN, launches 28th edition of The Jurist

It was a moment of legal grandeur and academic celebration on Thursday, 29th May 2025, as the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, honoured one of Nigeria’s foremost legal icons, Nureini Soladoye Jimoh, SAN, FCArb, FICMC, during the launch of the 28th edition of its flagship publication, The Jurist.

Held at the Old Moot Court Complex of the faculty, the colourful event drew an impressive gathering of legal minds, academia, and university leadership in honour of the distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria whose towering achievements have spanned national borders and inspired generations of lawyers.

The Jurist, more than a ceremonial publication, is a scholarly journal designed to spotlight the lives and legacies of eminent jurists while featuring rich, thought-provoking articles on legal doctrines, emerging jurisprudential debates, and contemporary socio-legal issues. The 2025 edition was dedicated to Mr. Jimoh, SAN, for his unwavering commitment to the legal profession and his consistent support for legal education and mentorship in Nigeria.

The honouree, who had previously received similar honours from institutions such as Bayero University Kano, University of Benin, Igbinedion University, and others, continues to be celebrated across the country for his integrity, intellect, and generosity, qualities that have made him a symbol of legal excellence.

The event was graced by an array of dignitaries including the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, was accompanied to the event by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services) Registrar of the University, Mal Mansur Adeleke Alfanla and other principal officers and senate members of the university, Deans of Faculties, Professors of Law, and other distinguished scholars. The legal profession was equally well represented by an elite group of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, including Mallam Yusuf Ali, SAN, Chief Adelodun, SAN, and K.K. Eleja, SAN (all ably represented), while B.R. Gold, SAN attended in person. Mrs Folashade Aladeniyi, the immediate Past Chairman of NBA, Ibadan.

Honourable members of the judiciary were also in attendance, notably Justice E.B. Muhammed, Justice Nureni Kuranga and Justice G. A. Sumonu of the Oyo State High Court. The gathering also welcomed prominent alumni and senior lawyers from within and outside Kwara State.

Among the attendees was Barrister Muhammad Ahmad, fondly referred to as the Foundational Nupe Lawyer, a proud alumnus of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin. Eminent members of the Society also attended including Comptroller of Customs Alh Ahmed Mohd (Rtd) and Deputy Controller of Customs Haj. Aminat, and others.

In a moving acceptance speech, Mr. Jimoh, SAN, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the faculty, students, and organisers. He commended the University for its exceptional standards and pledged his continued support for legal education and development.

In a demonstration of his unwavering commitment, the honouree made a ₦2 million donation during the launch of the journal and had earlier contributed ₦1.5 million to support the Law Students’ Society in preparation for the event. Other dignitaries followed suit with generous donations that marked the journal launch as a record-breaking success. The Dean of Law, Prof. Nimah Modupe Abdulraheem, appreciated the honoree’s contribution to legal education and development. She presented the Faculty Award to the honoree. The dignitaries also celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the University.

The ceremony concluded with a cake-cutting session, commemorative photographs, and a courtesy visit by the honouree to the office of the Vice Chancellor.

This event not only underscored the towering contributions of Nureini S. Jimoh, SAN to the legal profession but also reaffirmed the University of Ilorin Faculty of Law as a formidable force in legal education and thought leadership in Nigeria.
