Three personnel of the Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) have been hospitalised after they were attacked by an angry mob following a road accident involving a commercial bus and a trailer along Kwanar Dawaki on Zaria Road in Kano.

Solacebase reports that the incident occurred after officers stopped the commercial bus for a routine traffic inspection. While the check was ongoing, a speeding trailer reportedly rammed into the bus, causing it to somersault several times.

According to the second-in-command of the KAROTA patrol team on Zaria Road, Ibrahim Abubakar Ibrahim, the crash left several passengers with serious injuries, prompting immediate rescue efforts by KAROTA personnel.

He added that as the officers attended to the injured passengers, some angry youths at the scene attacked the KAROTA officials, accusing them of being responsible for the accident. Three personnel sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

It was gathered that the mob similarly set ablaze a patrol vehicle of the agency.

Meanwhile, the driver of the trailer, who allegedly caused the accident, fled the scene while attention was focused on rescuing the victims and assisting the injured KAROTA officers.

Reacting to the incident, the Managing Director of KAROTA, Faisal Mahmud Kabir, appealed to members of the public to respect and support uniformed personnel carrying out their lawful duties.

A statement signed by KAROTA’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Ibrahim Sharada, said the Managing Director also commended the agency’s personnel for their dedication and sacrifice in the discharge of their responsibilities despite the challenges they face.

He stressed that traffic officers should not be seen as enemies of society but as government representatives working to ensure order and safety on the roads.
