For the first time since joining Real Madrid in 2018, Vinícius Júnior‘s future at the club has become uncertain.

Reports suggest that contract renewal talks have stalled over issues such as salary, image rights and signing bonuses.

At the same time, Premier League clubs, especially Arsenal, are believed to be monitoring the situation closely.

The big question is: Who is to blame? Is it Real Madrid or Vinícius?

The truth is that neither side is completely wrong. Both have genuine reasons for their position. However, if they fail to reach an agreement, both the player and the club stand to lose much more than they may realise.

From a Young Talent to a Real Madrid Star

When Real Madrid signed Vinícius from Brazilian club Flamengo in 2018 for about €45 million, he was only 18 years old. Many fans doubted whether he was worth such a huge investment.

His early years in Spain were not easy. He was criticised for missing chances, mocked by rival fans and became the target of repeated racist abuse in several La Liga stadiums. There were also occasions when controversial refereeing decisions went against him, adding to his frustration.

Despite all these challenges, Vinícius never stopped fighting for the club. He worked hard, improved his game and gradually became one of the best players in the world.

A Player Who Has Delivered Success

Today, nobody can question Vinícius’ contribution to Real Madrid.

He has scored well over 100 goals for the club and provided more than 90 assists in all competitions. His speed, skill and ability to decide big matches have made him one of Madrid’s most important players.

More importantly, he has delivered when it mattered most.

He scored the winning goal against Liverpool in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final, helping Real Madrid lift their 14th European title. He also scored in the 2024 final against Borussia Dortmund. He played a key role in the club’s next Champions League triumph, proving once again that he is a player for the biggest occasions.

Winning two Champions League titles as one of the team’s key players is an achievement that only a few footballers can boast of.

More Than Just Football

Vinícius is not only valuable because of what he does on the pitch.

He has become one of football’s biggest global stars.

His jerseys are sold around the world. He attracts major sponsors, features in international advertising campaigns and has millions of followers on social media.

Reports indicate that during the recently concluded FIFA Club World Cup, Vinícius ranked second only to Neymar among Brazilian players in earnings from image rights. This shows that much of his value comes from the popularity and commercial income he generates, not just from football.

From Vinícius’ point of view, he believes he deserves greater recognition and better financial rewards because of everything he has achieved for the club.

Why Real Madrid Is Being Careful

Real Madrid also has its reasons.

Club president Florentino Pérez has always been careful about salaries and contracts. The club has maintained a wage structure over the years and is reluctant to make exceptions that could encourage other players to demand similar deals.

The club still sees Vinícius as one of its biggest assets and an important part of its future. There is no indication that Madrid wants to sell him.

However, reports suggest that the patience of both sides is beginning to wear thin as negotiations continue without a final agreement.

Why Madrid Cannot Easily Replace Him

If Vinícius leaves, Real Madrid will lose much more than a talented winger.

The club could lose millions of dollars through shirt sales, sponsorships, marketing campaigns, ticket sales and commercial partnerships linked to his global popularity.

Finding another player with his pace and talent is already difficult. Finding someone who can also match his worldwide commercial appeal may be even harder.

Why Leaving May Not Be Easy for Vinícius

A move to Arsenal could offer Vinícius a fresh challenge.

Reports suggest that Arsenal are willing to make him one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League with wages of around £478,000 per week.

The move could also give him greater responsibility as the team’s main star.

However, leaving Real Madrid would also mean starting all over again.

He would have to adapt to a new league, a new style of football, new teammates and new expectations. There is no guarantee that he would enjoy the same success or achieve the same level of recognition he currently enjoys at Real Madrid.

Sometimes, the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Mourinho Wants Him to Stay

Reports indicate that José Mourinho wants Vinícius to remain at Real Madrid next season because he believes the Brazilian will play a major role in his plans.

That shows how highly the player is still valued by those at the club.

Benzema Calls for Peace

Former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has also shared his opinion on the situation.

According to reports, Benzema described Vinícius as an important part of Real Madrid and urged both sides to sit down and resolve their differences through dialogue.

He also said that if Vinícius eventually decides to leave, he would respect whatever decision the Brazilian makes.

The Best Way Forward

This situation should not become a battle where one side wins and the other loses.

Vinícius has given Real Madrid some of the best years of his career. He has helped the club win major trophies, become one of the world’s biggest football stars and generate huge commercial value.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, gave him the opportunity to develop into one of the finest players in world football and stood by him during some of the most difficult moments of his career.

That relationship should not end because of disagreements over contract terms.

The best solution is for both sides to return to the negotiating table with open minds.

Real Madrid should recognise Vinícius’ importance both on and off the pitch, while the player should also appreciate that few clubs in world football can offer the prestige, success and global platform that Real Madrid provides.

If both sides are willing to compromise, they can continue a partnership that has already produced unforgettable memories.

Because if Vinícius leaves, Real Madrid will lose one of its biggest stars.

And if Vinícius leaves Madrid, he may also lose the club that helped turn him into one of the best players in the world.

Sometimes, the greatest victory is not winning another trophy—it is protecting a relationship that still has so much more to offer.
