Elder statesman Inuwa Waya has congratulated Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, following the state’s emergence as the highest-ranked sub-national government in education among member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In a statement issued on Monday, Waya described the recognition as a landmark achievement, saying it reflected the governor’s commitment to improving the education sector through strategic investments and policy reforms.

According to him, the prestigious recognition was conferred through the University of Paris’ Sub-National Education Spending Index, which ranked Kano ahead of 209 first-level sub-national governments across the 15 ECOWAS member states.

Waya said the ranking was evidence that purposeful leadership, prudent management of public resources and sound policy implementation could deliver measurable results with national and international recognition.

He attributed the achievement to the Kano State Government’s declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector and its record budgetary allocations of 29.5 per cent in 2024 and 30 per cent in 2025.

SolaceBase reports that the elder statesman noted that since assuming office, Governor Yusuf had embarked on extensive reforms, including the construction of new schools, renovation of dilapidated classrooms, recruitment and training of teachers, and provision of teaching and learning materials.

He said the interventions had significantly strengthened the education sector and created a solid foundation for future generations.

Waya described the international recognition as not only a victory for the Kano State Government but also a source of pride for the people of Kano State and Nigeria.

He maintained that the award underscored the importance of sustained investment in education as a key driver of social and economic development.

The elder statesman also joined other Nigerians, including the British High Commission in Nigeria, in congratulating Governor Yusuf and the people of Kano State on what he described as a well-deserved honour.
