The Kano State Government has described its newly launched Climate Change Policy as a vital roadmap for tackling environmental challenges and aligning the state with global climate goals.

The State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Mohammed Hashim, made the remarks on Thursday at a one-day high-level sensitisation session held at the Porto Golf Hotel, Bompai, Kano.

SolaceBase reports that the event was organised by the Ministry in collaboration with the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE).

“This policy is not just important to Kano, but to global interventions in climate change. States can’t participate meaningfully without a guiding document,” he said.

Hashim noted that the policy was developed through a participatory process involving at least eight ministries, including Health, Commerce, Transportation, and Industry, to ensure inclusivity and community ownership.

The commissioner stressed the importance of collective effort in implementing the policy, highlighting the roles of MDAs, civil society, media, and development partners in driving climate resilience.

“Each stakeholder has a unique and vital role, from policy alignment and programme delivery to community engagement,” he said.

Dr. Hashim also warned of the growing health impacts of climate change—such as respiratory diseases, low air quality, and mental health issues—while affirming the state’s commitment to sustainable, youth-driven, and long-term solutions.

“We are reviewing existing environmental bylaws and building a detailed roadmap for implementation. We’re not only thinking about now—we’re thinking long-term,” he added.

He commended the strong turnout and active contributions at the session, describing it as a boost to the state’s climate response efforts.
