As Nigerians set their sights on 2023, and hope that someone with gravitas and grassroots prowess can succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in order to consolidate the developmental strategies already embarked upon by the President Buhari administration, we should all bear in mind that desperate times require us to think outside the box.

Vice President Osinbajo is one unique Nigerian bubbling with great ideas, groomed both academically and politically over several years, and has shown great loyalty to a great leader, President Muhammadu Buhari.

As a Nigerian, I am free to openly express my feelings about the 2023 election, and from that perch I say: “I Endorse PYO!” I do that not because of any lack of affection for other APC Presidential Aspirants, but from great respect and affection for Vice President Osinbajo.

Professor Yemi Osinbajo (PYO) is Nigeria’s best hope and best suited to complete and consolidate the developmental strategies already embarked upon by President Buhari administration, by virtue of his policies and his leadership record in office, as a Lecturer, an Author, Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, Vice-President and as a reputable Pastor. PYO is tested and proven reliable.

Although, I don’t expect the reader to view my endorsement as edicts that dictate who I want you to support or how I expect you to vote, but I see it as information for you to use or not. I see a value in explaining how I think and why; because my thought process is as important as my recommendations. My hope is that it sparks conversations about what Nigerian society values in public servants and public service.

But whether we do so enthusiastically or resentfully, I do think there are some honorable reasons to support Osinbajo ticket in 2023.

Forget the so-called godfathers, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo would be a great President. PYO is smart and singularly prepared to be President. As a Vice President, he was in the middle of most of the significant domestic and foreign policy issues of the last 6 years plus, because in the recent years, no Vice-President has been as busy as Osinbajo, when compared to VPs Jonathan and Sambo. Prof. Osinbajo is the most consequential democratic Vice Presidents ever in the history of this country.

To further portray his competence, since assumption of office in 2015, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has chaired the National Economic Council in line with the position of the Constitution. The National Council on Privatization puts the Vice-President as the Chair of the National Privatization Council through the Privatization and Commercialization Act (1999). The revised National Emergency Management Agency Act 50 of 1999 also made the Vice-President the Chairman of the Governing Board. National Boundary Commission (NBC) Board – According to the National Boundary Commission Establishment Act (2006), the Vice-President is the Chairman of the Commission as appointed by the President. Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), the Vice-President is the Chairman of the Governing Board for the BCDA. National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies Board – According to the NIPSS Act (revised 2004), the Vice-President supervises the NIPSS.

Also, the Debt Management Office has the Vice-President as the Chairman of the DMO Supervisory Board.

As this country is horribly divided, if PYO will be supported and subsequently elected as President, we would begin to heal as a nation. Internationally, other than President Buhari, there is no more respected or beloved figure in Nigeria than PYO.

I can beat my chest and as well brag that as it stands today, no any Presidential Aspirant from all the political parties would ever credibly challenge Prof. Osinbajo’s ethics. And while almost everyone else has profited from politics, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has lived a comparatively modest lifestyle; he was the kind of public servant that never made money or excessive wealth a priority.

If Nigerians are really looking or hoping for someone that can actually reshape the country in the right way, the PYO Presidency will offer some hope, because he was a person with bold ideas to move the country in the right direction.

PYO’s historical contributions on the Economic Sustainability Plan and by extension the ESP Cash Transfer Scheme as facilitated through a wholly technology-based approach called the Rapid Response Register, gives me much optimism on his expertise and experience in lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty that he helped to put in place.

If the past six years plus have proved anything, it is that PYO has the competence and the ability to govern in that tradition, as he is uniquely suited to continue restoring the standards that generations of Nigerians took for granted: that presidents aspire to serve all Nigerians; listen to all sides; advance the welfare of all; and put the national interest ahead of their own.

For me, I am proud to endorse Prof. Osinbajo, because he is one candidate who has the potential to restore not just common decency and civility to the Aso Rock, but also a proper sense of the president’s role. In every crises facing the nation, I believe PYO would offer superior leadership.

I believe in an Osinbajo candidacy for so many reasons, and some of the reasons are: –

° Prof. Osinbajo has crossover appeal to many Nigerians across party lines, ethnic groups and religious divides.

° PYO will be a national healer and problem-solver, because I believe as a reputable Legal Practitioner, he will tirelessly strive to identify and work with the Legislative Arms of government in finding practical solutions to our manifold problems, with his experience, PYO understands that those problems are so complex and so big that overcoming them will require bipartisan support of all and sundry.

° PYO by dint of his background and experience, is a fighter who gives it as good as he gets. We need Osinbajo as a President because he is resolute, and will turn out to be very serious in drawing red lines and declaring a state of emergency on insecurity, power, poverty, etc.

° PYO if elected as President, shall hold people in government accountable; when programs or initiatives are bungled, because based on his antecedents, he has the courage to act in defiance of public opinion and polls when the national interest requires it.

° PYO if elected as Nigeria’s President will respect the prerogatives of the other branches of government. Being the quite but sharp and calculative leader, he will restrain himself in rhetoric, and making unrealistic promises and exaggerated claims of success and dire consequences if his initiatives are not adopted exactly as proposed. He will also restrain himself in expanding government when so much of what we have works so poorly and shall also restrain himself from questioning the motives of those who disagree and treating them as enemies with no redeeming qualities.

° PYO is one detribalized Nigerian, who groomed a lot of politicians across regional and religious divides, among whom is Hafizu Ibrahim Kawu; a member of House of Representatives representing Tarauni Federal Constituency, who happens to be a staunch supporter and a front-runner in Osinbajo Presidential Contest agitation.

Suffice to say, the most important quality we need in a President at this juncture in our history: must be a true unifier of Nigerians.

The nation is divided and disconnected. So, we need a president that will lead in restoring law and order, peace and civility to our political process, a president that will remind all Nigerians of our common destiny, and that our fate as a nation and as a people is bound up with one another, we need a president who will unify the country and with all sense of conviction and hope, I saw all these qualities and attributes embedded in Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

Prof. Osinbajo should be supported and given an opportunity in order to restore trust in truth, in leadership, governance and in other institutions of democracy, heal a divided nation, and begin the urgent task of rebuilding the Nigeria’s reputation in the world.

Nigerians deserve continuity, and ought to demand continuity. If PYO is duly elected as President come 2023 and APC take control of the Senate and retain the House, Prof. Osinbajo has the chance to be a transformative president, expanding opportunities, injecting fresh ideas and uniting the ailing nation.

If we are serious as a nation and ready to continue moving in the right direction, there should be no argument as to the suitability of Prof. Osinbajo to run for President in 2023.
