WOFAN-ICON 2 advocates institutionalisation of empowerment programs
The Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN-ICON 2) has advocated the institutionalisation of empowerment programs as a measure to successfully eradicate poverty and create peace in the community.
The Country Director, WOFAN-ICON 2 Project, Dr Salamatu Garba, stated this on Wednesday at a training program on Emotional Intelligence: Developing High Performing Team holding in London as part of activities marking the International Day of Peace set aside by the United Nations.
Garba said the institutionalisation of empowerment programs with the creation of cluster groups or hubs whereby beneficiaries are catered for in groups in a particular scheme is more beneficial, with a multiplier effect, as a measure to address poverty and ensure peaceful coexistence.

‘’When an empowerment scheme is targeted at beneficiaries in groups with training and monitoring, the chances of success are high and it reduces abuse. Similarly, the possibility of conflict reduction is high when people are gainfully engaged,’’ Dr. Salamatu Garba said.
.Speaking on the training with the International Peace Day celebration, Salamatu Garba who is also a United Nations Peace Ambassador said the composition of the participants includes policymakers, academia, politicians, traditional leaders and journalists among others to ensure that they are inculcated with requisite knowledge on peacebuilding that can guarantee peace in the general term and developing high performing team in the strata of the society.

According to her, ‘’the knowledge acquired by the participants who are leaders and managers in their various fields would translate to better management of personnel, improve employers and employees relations, greater understanding of the societal needs that will translate to a society of high productivity.
She noted that the training organised by the WOFAN -ICON 2 project is supported by the MasterCard Foundation, with a focus of bringing rural communities together, particularly farmers and processors so as to transform agriculture into profitable agribusiness and entrepreneurs.

On her part, the resource person, Vidjea Galkwad said the training aims to address, emotional intelligence, emotional quotient, behaviours and expectations, leadership team dynamics and autonomy, strategic team goal setting and performance metrics, building accountability, trust and resolving conflicts, communication skills and sustaining teamwork and action planning.
