Woman allegedly commits suicide amidst sallah celebration in Kano

Tension gripped Rimin Kebe quarters, Nasarawa Local Government Area, of Kano on Monday evening during the Sallah celebrations when the corpse of an unidentified woman was found hanging at the residence of Malam Abdullahi Isah, also known as Malam Auduwa.

The woman reportedly visited Malam Auduwa for prayers regarding her spiritual problems.

SolaceBase reports that Malam Auduwa, who had inherited the role from his late father, a respected Islamic scholar, provided her with water infused with supplications.

However, the woman returned after leaving and was later found hanging in the toilet of his house.

A chair, presumably used to facilitate the hanging, was discovered at the scene. The woman reportedly tied a thick rope to the roof and hanged herself, leaving her body dangling.

Contrary to this, Malam Auduwa’s brother, Rabi’u Isah, claimed the woman never met his brother.

He said that “A man using the toilet found the corpse while Malam Auduwa was away.”

A Neighbor of the cleric, Jibril Isah Zango confirmed that someone in the house called to report the incident, noting that Malam Auduwa and his students were absent as they had gone to inform the police.

“The woman had arrived alone with her two children, instructing them to leave and return later. By the time they returned, she had already hanged herself” he added.

Umar Ibrahim Umar, an eyewitness, described the incident as unusual in the Hausa community.

He was informed of the hanging while waiting for a friend after the Maghrib prayer, observed around some minutes to seven in the evening.

Umar mentioned that “There were conflicting reports about Malam Auduwa’s awareness of the woman’s presence, but the police were notified and took the body to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) for further investigation.”

Malam Ilyasu Adamu, the Ward Head of Rimin Kebe Gabas, said this was the first recorded suicide in the community, and police investigations are ongoing.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, told SolaceBase that they are unaware of the development and have not received any information about the incident.

However, he assured that the police will investigate and determine what happened. In his words, “We are yet to be informed about the incident. But we will surely investigate and find out what is going on.”
