World News Media Congress opens in Zaragoza, as Pate leads Nigerian delegation

The 73 World News Media Congress, on Wednesday opened in Zaragoza, Spain with Editors, Public Relations Professionals and Media scholars across the globe in attendance.

SOLACEBASE reports that, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Kashere, Professor Umaru Pate is leading the Nigerian Delegation at the conference which is to last for three days.

Other participants from Nigeria sponsored by MacArthur Foundation are Dr Sulaiman Yaradua and Dr. Sule Ya’u Sule from Mass Communication Department, Faculty of Communications, Bayero University, Kano.

During the opening day on Wednesday, issues such as media in Post COVID challenges, the Ukraine/Russia war, Evolving Public Relations and News Media Relationship and strategies for media to remain in business despite the enormous challenges posed by the new media were adequately discussed.

According to a statement released on Monday, by World Association of News Publishers, World News Day is the focus of a 90-minute live-streamed in-person event from The World News Media Congress in Zaragoza, Spain, at 15:00 CET on September 28.

The statement said Vivian Schiller, Executive Director of Aspen Digital, The Aspen Institute, will chair proceedings which will feature the following speakers, that include, David Walmsley, Editor-in-Chief, The Globe and Mail, Warren Fernandez, Editor-in-Chief, The Straits Times, Alessandra Galloni, Editor-in-Chief, Reuters, Kathy English, Chair, The Canadian Journalism Foundation.

It said others are Shirish Kulkarni, Journalist, Community Organiser, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Phoebe Connelly, Director of Next Generation Audiences and The Washington Post.

‘’The public can view the session on the verified World News Day YouTube channel,‘’ the statement said.

‘’The World News Day campaign is organised by The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and WAN-IFRA’s World Editors Forum and it is sponsored by Google News Initiative.‘’
