Gov Yusuf accuses Ganduje of selling off Kano city wall

By Aminu Ibrahim

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has expressed his disappointment over how the administration of former Governor Ganduje sold parts of the historic Kano City Wall (Badala).

He made this statement during the celebration of World Culture Day held at the Coronation Hall in the Kano Government House on Sunday.

He said it is unfortunate that after the end of Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso’s administration, the City Wall was sold off.

According to him, anyone travelling from Murtala House to Kofar Kabuga will see how the Wall (Badala) was destroyed, cut down, and given to individuals who built shops on it without considering its cultural and historical significance.

He described the situation as saddening and stated that they have now stopped the construction on the site.

Governor Abba Kabir added that although Germany had shown interest in renovating the Wall, the previous administration did not cooperate.

He further announced that the government plans to convert the Kurmawa Prison into a Center for Traditional Culture Studies, while the prison facility will be relocated to Janguza.

He called on stakeholders and those who inherited traditional crafts to preserve and uphold them properly.

He said the government will support the revival of indigenous crafts and traditional culture.

He also mentioned that contracts have been awarded for the renovation of the Marina at Kofar Mata and Karofin Sudan.

Gov Yusuf added that funds have been allocated to renovate all traditional markets, especially those that deal in cultural and traditional goods.
