Gov. Yusuf dialogues with NMA to prevent industrial crisis

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed for the immediate resumption of medical services at the Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital few days after the suspension of its operation by medical doctors.

SolaceBase had reported that the Kano branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) had last week directed its members at Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital to suspend operations over security challenges.

The association in a statement said some female medical doctors who were on duty recently at night at the hospital were harassed and the security personnel could not prevent the situation that is becoming a regular occurrence

Similarly, the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners of Nigeria on Thursday issued a notice to commence a two-week warning strike over the failure of the state government to meet the needs of its members.

In a statement issued by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Governor’s spokesperson, on Friday said Gov. Yusuf had a fruitful discussion with state branches leadership of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), and National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners of Nigeria (NAGMMDP).

The statement said during the meeting, matters related to welfare, safety of personnel, and other issues of importance on the health sector were discussed.

The Governor expressed dismay over the attempt of security personnel to harass and intimidate caregivers at Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital.

“We wish to condemn in totality this barbaric act and caution all security agencies working in the state to desist from unnecessary display of firearms at public places that enjoy peaceful atmosphere” said the Governor

Governor Yusuf further reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare services to the residents of Kano state.

Briefing journalists at Kano Government House shortly after the meeting with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Kano state branch, Dr. Abdullahi Kabir Suleiman, stated that all pending issues were resolved amicably in the best interest of the good people of the state to save lives of healthcare seekers especially children.

Last night, at about 4.00 am, Governor Yusuf paid an impromptu visit to Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital where he expressed disappointment over the suspension of medical services at the facility as a result of harassment of health workers by security personnel.
