Open Letter: Gov Yusuf urged to transform Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital to spinal cord injury medical complex
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has been urged to transform Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital at Giginyu to a spinal cord injury comprehensive medical rehabilitation complex to address the challenges of spinal cord injury patients.
The appeal was contained in an open letter addressed to Kano State Governor by a spinal cord injury patient, Engineer Haruna Abdul and forwarded to SolaBase.
In the letter, he said statistics from some of the Hospitals in Kano, indicate that over 4000 cases of SCI are recorded annually.
Hence, “A well organized & comprehensive “Back to life” rehabilitation care centre, which will address the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of Spinal Cord Injury complications resulting from the devastating effects of the injuries is essential for the good life of those who survived a spinal cord injury disabilities.
The letter read in part, ‘’I am pleased and honoured to have submitted the complete proposal to the office of the Commissioner of Health #DrAbubakarlabaranuyusuf the Speaker House of Assembly Kano, #RtHonjibrinIsmailfalgore during the 2024 Budget Public Hearing and I also submitted the same proposal to the office of the Executive Governor via the office of the Chief of Staff.
‘’Your Excellency Sir, the proposal contains Part A introduction of the SCI and Part B with illustrated pictures in which both the suggestions and strategic plans for the transformation of Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital – MBSH, Giginyu to bring the rehab centre into reality. Basically, whether the proposal is successful in bringing about the desired objectives or not will ultimately depend on how effectively its recommendations are implemented. It must be stated here that the recommendations can be referred to as durable and sustainable that are practical and achievable.

‘’Sir, my name is Abdul a spinal cord injury survivor and a concerned Kano citizen. It is with solicitous and sense of communal responsibility that I write to intimate His Excellency with a major plea of persons living with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), otherwise called as the “SUPER PATIENT”, in Kano State and Nigeria which has received little or closed to nothing from the past governments. The problems and challenges faced by SCI patients are uncountable, as they shared their plights on several medical rehabilitation issues which have been bothering them but with little or no help at all from the local, state or federal governments.
‘’Lastly, I am appealing to His Excellency to again consider the acquiring of Marhaba and Eldorado Cinemas and convert them to be similar to the Hasiya Bayero by doing so the pressure and congestion at Hasiya Bayero will be reduced. Thank you immensely for your consideration and understanding.
