Gov Yusuf visits correctional centres, donates relief items to inmates

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has paid a visit to two major custodial centres in the state—Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Janguza, and Medium Security Custodial Centre, Goron Dutse—reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare and humane treatment of inmates.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Musbahu Lawan K/Nasarawa, Chief Superintendent of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, on Friday.

According to the statement, the governor’s visit followed recent media reports alleging inadequate feeding and incidents of abuse, including sodomy, within the facilities.

During the visit, Governor Yusuf donated two cows, assorted food items, toiletries, as well as essential beds and bedding materials to enhance inmates’ living conditions.

“The Kano State Command welcomes these generous donations and assures the public that they will be distributed equitably and utilized judiciously,” the statement read.

It added that the Nigerian Correctional Service maintains a zero-tolerance policy for abuse or human rights violations and is committed to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of inmates in line with both national and international standards.

The command further expressed appreciation for the continued support of the state government and reaffirmed its dedication to correctional best practices, rehabilitation, and the protection of inmates’ rights.
