91% Of Kano Deaths Are Males – Survey

A community-based survey on reported increased mortality in Kano state has revealed that the findings clearly indicate that the increased deaths in Kano State happened among the elderly people, mostly above 60 years of age across both genders and that the male gender accounted for 91% as compared to only 9% females.

The survey conducted by Yusuf Yaú Gambo of Applied Mathematician and Data Analyst Department of Mathematics Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, and forwarded to Solacebase on Wednesday was reviewed by Auwal Abubakar of Medical and Public Health Professional University of California Berkeley, USA and Chief of Party, USAID SENSE Project American University of Nigeria Audu Liman.

The survey added that all local government areas of Kano metropolis were affected by this spike in devastating deaths in the last two weeks with Kano Municipal being the local government seeing the highest death toll.

Solacebase reports that spike deaths have been occurring in Kano over ten days with more than 640 deaths recorded. Though the state government initially denied the reports but later commenced an investigation into the issue just as the federal government is already doing.

It further revealed that only a few local governments outside Kano Metropolitan were affected by the situation with an insignificant number of cases and these local governments were in the Kano South Senatorial District adding that, it is interesting to know that only Gwarzo LGA in the northern part of Kano was affected and with a negligible number as well.

It further stated that clinically it’s hard to point out the possible cause of death based on the data, however, the possibility of relating the situation to the current COVID-19 pandemic could not be ruled out.  It stated that this is because the data strongly aligns with the current COVID-19 pandemic in terms of symptoms, incubation period, age group affected and other demographic characteristics.

The survey also recommended that the government should conduct autopsies to a reasonable number of the dying people to figure out the possible cause of deaths, stressing that, this can be achieved by situating a medical team in cemeteries that would be taking samples with the consent of bereaved families present.

It also recommended that the government should constitute a team of experts to conduct an in-depth and standard survey that could specifically identify the exact death toll in the state and also enlighten and keep abreast the good people of Kano State on the situation going on with regards to this mysterious deaths in the state because the report shows that 96% of the respondents were already aware of the mass deaths.
