ACReSAL trains stakeholders on measures to check gender-based violence in Kano

The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) has trained stakeholders from various organizations, service providers, ministries, and MDAs with a view to raising awareness about gender-based violence and its impact on women and girls, in Kano.

The training was also aimed at equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and skills to identify, prevent, and respond to gender-based violence whenever it occurs.

Speaking at the training held at Aminu Kano Center for Democratic Research Mumbayya House, Kano, the Kano ACReSAL, Project Coordinator Dr. Dahiru Hashim, represented by the Director Admin and General Services Alhaji Shehu Sani Shehu said ACReSAL project is aimed at increasing the implementation of sustainable landscape management practices in targeted watersheds in northern Nigeria and strengthening Nigeria’s long-term enabling environment for integrated climate-resilient landscape management.

The Project Coordinator noted that due to the significance of gender-based violence in Nigeria, it is necessary to train stakeholders from various sectors, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and community-based organizations, on various aspects of gender-based violence, including its causes, consequences, and preventive strategies.

SOLACEBASE reports that the participants were also trained on how to provide support to survivors of gender-based violence.

A Community and Institutional Strengthening Expert Dr. Talatu Buba Bello said the training was timely considering the numerous gender-based violence women are facing especially in northern Nigeria.

According to her, “There is a high need to sensitize our women to understand what gender-based violence means, and how to stand for their rights whenever they encounter any abuse in any form.”

She noted that the rising numbers of gender-based violence cases is very alarming, adding that with the training of stakeholders and individuals, the numbers would reduce drastically.

The Head Grassroots Care and Aid Foundation Auwal Muhammad Danlarabawa  commended ACReSAL for the timely intervention in reducing the cases of Gender-based violence in Kano, with the sensitization, adding that ” We learnt a lot from this training, and we are going to impart it on members of our organizations.”

A representative of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Barr. Hajara Safiyu Hamza said one of the key areas dealt with in the training is changing the mindset of the victims of gender-based violence so that they can become very productive and boost their morale and self-confidence.

ACReSAL project is a tripartite initiative of the World Bank, Federal Government, and the Kano State Government.

The project aims to increase the adoption of climate-resilient landscape management practices and enhance livelihoods in targeted arid/semi-arid.
