The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has congratulated Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Governor of Gombe state, on his election as Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum.
The Foundation expresses its hopes for his success as he takes on this crucial leadership role during a critical time for the region.
This was contained in a congratulatory message issued by Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, Director General Engr. Abubakar Gambo Umar , on Wednesday.
‘’The Foundation believes that Governor Yahaya’s experience and competence make him well-suited to guide the Forum to success. The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation pledges to work closely with the new Chairman for the betterment of the region’s people,’’ the statement said.
‘’The Northern region of Nigeria faces numerous challenges, some of which have persisted for many years. Insecurity is one of the most pressing challenges, as the area has been affected by various forms of violence, including terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes. ‘’
‘’Poverty is another major challenge, with a significant portion of the population living below the poverty line. The issue of out-of-school and Almajiri children also poses a considerable challenge, as it perpetuates poverty and leaves many young people without the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. The region also faces a declining economy as various challenges, including climate change and the impact of conflict, have hit the once-thriving agricultural sector.’’
‘’To overcome these challenges, the new Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum must bring together the collective efforts of all members of Northern states’ governments. This will require a collaborative approach that involves sharing of best practices, pooling of resources, and joint problem-solving. The Chairman will also need to work closely with the Federal Government to ensure that the needs of the Northern region are adequately addressed in national policies and programs.’’
According to the statement, ‘’the Chairman should consider the promotion of economic diversification and job creation, focusing on sectors with high growth potential, such as renewable energy, tourism, and technology. In addition, we appeal to the Chairman to prioritize the development of human capital in the region through investments in education, healthcare, and skills training. This will help address the issue of out-of-school and Almajiri children and provide young people with the tools they need to succeed.’’
‘’We are confident that the new Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum will succeed because of his ability to bring together the collective efforts of the Northern states, non – state actors and work closely with the Federal Government. The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation pledges to cooperate with the Forum to enhance the region’s socioeconomic development.’’
