Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa led members of the factional All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State have conducted a parallel local government congress.
A statement by the state leader of the faction, Alhaji Surajo Maikatako, on Saturday described the process as peaceful as he claimed that it was conducted in the 14 local government areas in the North West state.
Maikatako who commended security agencies for ensuring that the parallel congress was conducted peacefully was however silent on the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the process.
It was gathered that ward congresses were conducted in the state last weekend and substantive ward officers had since emerged.

Maikatako, who accused the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee of taking sides with his Zamfara State counterpart, Bello Muhammad Matawalle in the latter’s desperation to hijack the party structures in the state, vowed to institute legal action against the legitimacy of the Governor Buni led caretaker committee.
“We are going to challenge the APC national leadership for siding with the state governor. We will go to court to compel the national leadership of the party to recognise our camp. We are the legitimate faction.”

Former Zamfara State governor, Abdul Aziz Yari has, however, dismissed the congress conducted by Senator Marafa’s faction as a charade.
The publicity secretary of Yari’s camp, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad Birnin Magaji, described the exercise as illegal.
“Our stand is that we will not be a party to illegality. The exercise they call congress to us is a charade because we have a subsisting case before the Federal High Court, Gusau,” he said.
