ASUU, KUST Wudil Management Crisis- Govt. Intervenes

Kano State Government has pledged to mediate between the Management of Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil and Academic Staff Union of the University {ASUU} on their grievances so as to address the issues.

The State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure stated this when she received Executive members of ASUU, KUST, Wudil branch at her office.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Education Ministry Public Relations OfficerSunusi Kofar Na’isa and forwarded to Solacebase.

Solacebase recalled that KUST ASUU branch had last week raised the allegation of poor funding, misappropriation of fund, nonpayment of staff earned allowances and plans to increase students registration fees. Although the university authority denied all the allegations.

The statement said the Commissioner maintained that government is not aware of any intention of the Management of the university to increase student registration fees noting that the government is not happy about the issue,  assuring that the issues would be addressed.

‘’I am appealing to you to withdraw the ultimatum of industrial action and allow the ministry to do its best with a view to having a lasting solution, ‘’said the Commissioner.

According to the statement, the ASUU Chairman, KUST, Wudil Comrade Muhammad Sani Gaya, said the visit was to intimate the Commissioner of challenges bedevilling development of the institution for Possible Intervention.

‘’ The union had conducted its congress meeting on 16th January 2020 and resolved to tackle the following issues that hindered the development of the University and staff welfare. These include a proposal of hike in registration fees, pension matters, non-payment of 50% Post Graduate Study Grant and among others.’’

Comrade Gaya called on the government to address the issues timely as failure to do that would force the union to embark on  strike action by next NEC meeting.
