The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in the country has laid bare or naked, the infrastructural deficit, not only in Nigeria Universities but other sectors of education.

Solacebase reports that the Kano Acting Zonal Coordinator of the Union, Prof. Abdulkadir Mohammed stated this on Tuesday while briefing newsmen in Kano, over the crisis in the Nigerian University system.

“This is as a result of the continuous refusal of the government to heed to ASUU calls for proper fundings of our Universities to make them globally competitive since 1992.

“Our previous agreements with the government in 1992, 2001, 2009 MoU, 2017 MoA, NEEDs assessment reports have all made adequate provisions for the infrastructural needs of our Universities to make them cope with the COVID-19 protocols.

“With lack of running water and electricity, overcrowded class, poorly spaced hostels rooms, libraries, laboratories and staff offices, non of the Universities will satisfy the requirements of social distancing.

“Nigerian Universities today are poorly equipped to cope with the COVID-19 protocols for school resumption as outlined by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).”

He called on the Federal Government to ensure the provision of all the necessary COVID-19 safety protocols before Schools should be reopened.

According to the union, there is a need for the provision of all the necessary COVID-19 safety protocols to ensure the protection of life safety of the students and also the staff.

According to Prof. Muhammad, if the Federal Government failed to take necessary measures before the resumption, it will be held responsible over the health of the students and staff.

“Let me make it categorical that the Union is not averse to opening public Universities, but before doing that, the government must provide all the necessary conditions that will make it safe for our members and the students to avoid a spike in the case of COVID-19 pandemic.”

Speaking on the issue of the Earned Academic Allowances, the Acting Zonal Chairman said, it was agreed said that’’ government will release the sum of N25bn to defray part of the outstanding arrears of earned allowances to all categories of eligible staff not later than 28th February 2019. Also, the government agreed to settle outstanding balance up to 2018 in four equal instalments within a time frame of thirty-six months. It similarly promised to mainstream further payments of the allowances into the annual budget beginning with the 2019 budget. However, the government has failed to meet any of this agreement, then who is courting trouble?
