ASUU Stages Walk Out As Meeting With FG Delegation End In Deadlock

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday staged a walkout from the meeting with a federal government delegation led by the minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

ASUU National President Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, led the union’s delegation to the meeting with ex-officio members .

The minister of education, Malam Adamu Adamu, was not present when it started.

However the ASUU delegation arrived at the Labour ministry at about 5:00 p.m while the federal government delegation led by Dr. Chris Ngige, arrived  6:00 p.m.

After the walkout by the lecturers at the meeting,  Dr. Chris Ngige in an interview with Journalists denied the walkout of the ASUU members.

He said  the lecturers did not walk out as some compromise was reached.

When asked why the lecturers were not in a happy mood  as they shun Journalists after the meeting, the minister said that it may not be unconnected to the fact that all their demands are yet to be met.

Ngige assured the union that attention will be accorded to three critical demands, which are salary shortfall, university revitalisation and earned allowances of lecturers.

ASUU embarked on an indefinite strike on November 4,demanding improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the federal government.

The reconciliation meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government  has been adjourned indefinitely.
