BUK Centre empowers youth to become effective leaders

The Vice-Chancellor Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas has described Education for Sustainable Development as a catalyst for empowering youth for a sustainable future.

Prof. Abbas stated this at the 6th Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Youth Conference organized by the Bayero University Centre for Gender Studies held at the university’s new campus on Saturday.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the institute has provided a conducive learning environment for development and empowering youths for a sustainable future and should not be taken for granted.

SOLACEBASE reports that the Conference for Sustainability Ambassadors with the theme “Education for Sustainability Development” aimed at empowering youth across Nigeria universities for a sustainable future hosted students from 15 universities and provided a platform for them to exchange ideas, and experiences as well as showcasing the successful ESD initiatives implemented by the young people

Addressing the session, the Director, Centre for Gender Studies, Bayero University Kano, Dr. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmed says the Centre has empowered youth for themto become effective leaders that will bring sustainable development to Nigeria.

Dr. Suwaiba said that the conference was organized to identify key challenges hindering sustainable development and harness the immense potentials that lie within youths.

She noted that the deliberations would significantly shape the role of education, in forging a sustainable future as well as going a long way in influencing policies, initiatives, and transformation of communities, and the world at large.

“Sustainability is crucial to development and is always important that we start teaching the youth about issues around sustainability. So when we understood that most of our youth are not aware of what sustainability means, we came up with a program that targets youths in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria and informs, sensitizes, mentors, empowers, and groom them with the knowledge, leadership skills, policies with regards to the issues of sustainability so they can become effective leaders that can come up with effective policies to be mitigating the climate change issues, security challenges and all the crisis that we encounter in our environment so that we can achieve sustainable development in Nigeria,’’ Dr. Suwaiba said.

In a remark, former Minister of Education and chairperson of the occasion, Prof. Rukayya Ahmed Rufa’i described the conference as unique, as it offers youths from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to share experiences, and ideas to support greater success.

She said some of the initiative beneficiaries have been active in socio-economic activities, political areas, innovation & technology, and other society-changing activities.

The conference also featured award presentations to outstanding personalities who have contributed and excelled in the Education for Sustainable Development program.

They include the former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Yusuf Burutai (rtd), former Nigerian Ambassador to Brazil, Ahmed Muhammad Makarfi, former Nigerian Ambassador to Tanzania, Hamisu Umar Takalmawa, former Nigerian Ambassador to Romania, Safiya Ahmed Nuhu, former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Prof. Yahuza Bello, former Director Center for Gender Studies, Prof. Hassana Darma and Head of BUK Television, Dr. Faruq Umar Usman among others.
