BUK holds international conference on Islam and violence: facts and fallacies

The Center for Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue, Bayero University Kano (BUK) has organized 2nd International Conference on Islam and Violence: Facts and Fallacies to unravel the truths and dispel the myths surrounding the relationship between Islam and violence.

Speaking at the occasion,  the director of the Center for Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue, Dr. Muhammad Sani Umar, said the aim of the conference was to unravel the intricacies surrounding the perception of Islam in relation to violence, dispelling misconceptions and promoting a nuanced understanding rooted in scholarly discourse, by bringing together experts, academics, and thought leaders from around the world.

“We anticipate engaging discussions, insightful presentations, and collaborative efforts towards a shared goal of promoting peace, understanding, and unity. We encourage all participants to actively participate in the session, exchange ideas, and forge connections that will extend beyond the confines of this conference. We extend our gratitude to our esteemed speakers, sponsors, and each one of you for your commitment to fostering an environment of intellectual exploration and academic excellence.”

In his remark, the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, said that BUK has always been committed to fostering an environment of intellectual curiosity and rigorous academic inquiry.

According to him the aim of the gathering is not only to explore the various dimensions of the theme but also to provide a platform for scholars to exchange ideas, share research findings, and engage in constructive conversations that will contribute to a more nuanced and informed understanding of the subject matter.

“Islam, as a religion of peace, justice, and compassion, has often been misrepresented in the media and distorted by those who seek to perpetuate a narrow and distorted narrative. It is our collective responsibility as scholars to delve into the depths of our intellectual capacities and shed light on the reality of Islam, separating facts from fallacies.”

“Throughout the course of this conference, I encourage you all to engage in robust discussions, challenge existing paradigms, and contribute to the body of knowledge that will emerge from our collective efforts. Let us approach this conference with open minds and a commitment to scholarly integrity, respecting diverse perspectives and fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect.”

“This conference serves as a testament to our dedication to promoting understanding and dialogue, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.”

On his part, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, said the conference is a very important opportunity to raise awareness on how Islam promotes peace and tranquility and to show the world that Islam condemns any form of violence.

He also commended the effort of the University for organizing the conference and called on the organizers to consider inviting people from other faiths in the next conference in order to share understanding and show them how Islam encourages peace and discourages any forms of violence.

 According to him, “Islam promotes peace, coexistence, and shows us how to mingle with non-believers. It also protects the rights of human beings and even animals. Islam is a religion of peace.”

The organizers of the conference honored the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, the Rector of Sahel University Mali; Dr. Seydou Madibabba Sylla, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission; Prof. A.A. Rasheed; the Executive Governor of Kano State; the Executive Governor of Katsina State; the Executive Governor of Bauchi State; Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar; and Prof. Salisu Shehu.
