Collapsed Building: Two died, 7 rescued in Kano

Emergency rescue officials at a collapsed three storey building on Beruit road, in Kano on Tuesday, have confirmed the death of one out of the eight victims rescued alive and a Staff of Kano Electricity Distribution Company, (KEDCO), from a collapsed three storey building at Beruit road, GSM Market on Tuesday, in Kano.

Nigerian Red Cross, Kano Branch Secretary, Alhaji Musa D Abdullahi, confirmed the KEDCO staff, Ya’u Abdullahi’s death during the rescue operation.

“The KEDCO staff died, when he was trying to disconnect the building from the high tension but unfortunately, the power that was already shut down from the transformer, technically relayed back and trapped him which led to his death on the spot,’’ Abdullahi. D. Abdullahi said.

Sources told Solacebase that the late KEDCO staff funeral would hold at Kabuga Housing Estate by 9.00am, Wednesday (Today).

Solacebase had reported that a three storey building under construction, on Beirut road, GSM market collapsed at about 3.05pm Tuesday afternoon with some people trapped under the rubbles.

Also, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that one person died from the eight rescued and taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Dr Nuradeen Abdullahi, NEMA Kano Territorial Coordinator, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Tuesday.

Abdullahi, while giving an update on the tragedy said the incident occurred at about 3:05 p.m on Tuesday.

According to him, so far, eight persons were rescued and were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, for treatment.

“One person died, six persons with minor injuries had been treated and discharged, while one person with multiple fractures was still receiving treatment,” the top NEMA official said.

Abdullahi said that search and rescue operations were still ongoing to rescue those trapped beneath the rubbles
