Corporal Punishment: Kano varsity suspends lecturer

The Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, in Kano, has suspended a lecturer accused of meting out corporal punishment.

SOLACEBASE had reported that a viral video that emerged on Monday showed a lecturer with the university issuing out corporal punishment to students over their lateness or noise making in the class among others.

The video generated a lot of controversy and condemnation as it was never expected of a tertiary institution.

It was also followed by a petition to the university by a Kano-based Lawyer, Barr. Abba Hikima.

A statement issued by Sai’du Abdullahi Nayaya, Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations Unit, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, on Tuesday, said the lecturer was identified, queried, and suspended.

The statement titled ‘’Re: Viral video on students maltreatment,’’ said the staff in question after the suspension would face the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for further action.

The statement read,’’ The management is hereby assuring parents and guardians and the general public that the welfare and safety of the students are topmost and any breach by whosoever will not be tolerated and go unpunished.’’

‘’The management is also assuring that it will continue to provide conducive learning conditions to the students for them to graduate successfully at the end of their studies.’’
