‘Make Kano Green campaign’ targets 1 million trees in one year

The Make Kano Green initiative has set a target of planting one million trees within this year. 

The project leader, Ismail Auwal, stated in an interview with SolaceBase.

He said the project originated from social media in 2019, and garnered the backing of communities and individuals, by receiving seedling donations.

“In under a month this year, the initiative has rapidly picked up pace, with an impressive count of over ten thousand trees planted in just two weeks,” said Auwal.

He noted that “the initiative is witnessing robust support from local communities, with many stepping forward to donate seedlings.”

According to him, the project prioritizes underserved communities, aiming to deliver environmental advantages and improve the living standards of the residents. 

“Make Kano Green” stands as a symbol of what can be achieved when a community unites for a common cause.”

”Despite a high demand for trees and an expectation for the project to provide seedlings, the reality is a reliance on donations.”

“Individuals can make a difference by planting trees in their communities or workplaces, even without formally joining our campaign,” Auwal encourages.

”The initiative promotes a sense of ownership among the communities, ensuring the trees’ protection and survival.”

“When the community feels ownership, they are more inclined to safeguard the trees,” he explains.

Auwal noted that while non-governmental organizations have not yet offered support, efforts are being made to collaborate with the Kano state government.

“Recently we had a meeting with the Minister of Environment and we discussed various issues with regards to tree planting.

As “Make Kano Green” progresses, the dedication to a vibrant and sustainable Kano remains unwavering, ” the project leader added.
