COVID-19: Experts Bemoan Exclusion Of Physiotherapists In Strategic Planning
Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) has revealed that it is noteworthy that utilization of key rehabilitation experts like the physiotherapists are yet to be optimized by the government in the strategic planning to mitigate the spread and management of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.
This was contained in a position paper on rehabilitation in COVID-19 pandemic, issued to newsmen in Kano and signed by NSP national president Dr Rufai Yusuf Ahmad.
According to the paper, the lives of Nigerians are of utmost importance to the society thereby motivating the society to make clear some of the important roles that physiotherapists in the fight against this pandemic can play in curbing the menace.

The position paper also outlined that, for COVID-19 patients, the initial respiratory physiotherapy priority is to keep the airway clear and unobstructed of sputum to enable sufficient oxygen to the lungs adding that, this can be achieved with appropriate and early chest physiotherapy involving but not limited to positioning, bronchial hygiene, respiratory facilitation, techniques to improve lung volumes, drainage, among other measures.
It stresses that, based on the life-saving importance of the NSP and its members in the 36 states and the FCT, the society is given assurance to Nigerians that it is committed to helping the federal government in the fight against COVID-19.
