CSO advocates passage of Child Rights Act to check GBV in Kano

A civil society organisation, Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has appealed to Kano state government and the state assembly to actualize the passage of the Child Rights Act at the state level to curtail the menace of Gender-Based Violence.

CITAD Gender project program Manager Zainab Aminu stated this while briefing newsmen in Kano, on Thursday.

She said that if such a bill has turned into fruition it will contribute to immense magnitude of addressing the menace of Gender-based violence

“This press conference is a fraction of a wider project, titled “Strengthening Citizens Response and Protection Against Gender-Based Violence in Kano, Nigeria” targeting contributing in flattening the GBV surge in the society and to promote the wellbeing of women and girl child, including the provision of harmonious, living an environment,’’ Zainab said.

“Its broader objectives is to gives a safer and violence-free society for women and girls, a situation devoid from gender violence and discrimination to cement the wider crack in girl-child education, leading to the acquiring, educational accomplishments to girl child and womenfolk in generality”.

Zainab Aminu stressed that in comparison with the data collected on GDV with that of the previous month, there was a surge in reported cases, stressing that all hands need to be on deck to arrive at the desired point towards addressing the challenges.

“Our conviction point is that we need evidence-based advocacy to successfully engage and mobilize various stakeholders to be united by rolling up their sleeves towards addressing the problem of GBV in society.

‘’In the of data acquisition, we are sharing with you, CITAD has put into practice diverse-approach machinery including The use of electronic platforms (CITAD GBV App) for people to reports incidences in privacy.’’

“To provide a safe space for young girls to report cases and threats as well learn how to protect themselves at the same time have the opportunity for personalized counselling to deal with the trauma. We have set up two safe spaces for learning and creativity in some schools that are to serve a cluster of schools and we have positioned several highly accomplished women professionals as mentors will are available both on-site and off-site to listen to the girls and other victims for counselling and support to overcome the trauma”.

CITAD further urged Religious and Traditional leaders both at state and local levels to intensify efforts in creating awareness against GBV and encouraging individuals to voice out when they observe any such violence.
