FAAN staff to commence strike next week over salary cut

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria workers have threatened to embark on industrial action in protest against a reduction in their salaries by the authority.

This was contained in a joint statement on Thursday in Lagos by the workers three unions, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria; National Union of Air Transport Employees; and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals.

Some of the affected workers by the July pay cut told Solacebase that they were paid 50% of net (That is after all deductions) of how they worked throughout the lockdown period with a promise of extra allowance during the time.

‘’It is callous for the management to pay the reduced salaries on Wednesday evening, knowing fully well that there is a public holiday on Thursday and the staff were not even informed of the development.’’

‘’The sad issue is that the deduction of union dues and members cooperative monthly deductions are not even remitted,’’ said some of the staff.

According to the statement, “We observed with total dismay the payment of July 2020 half salary to FAAN workers which the unions are not aware.

“This came as a rude shock to the unions because we have vehemently rejected payment of half salary in the past.

“This attitude by management is against the principle of collective negotiation as it undermines the labour law.

“By this action, we are mobilising all FAAN workers nationwide for protest starting from Wednesday 5th August 2020. This is a red alert notice.”

Also, most of the staff are scared to speak to journalists as the regime of the new Managing Director, Captain Rabiu Yadudu is so hostile with so many staff facing various panels on the allegation of divulging information about corruption and other atrocities committed by the top management to the public.
