Minister of Information Lai Mohammed says that the federal government spends about N3.5 million monthly to feed a Shiite cleric who has been detained by government for over two years.
Although the Shiites Leader was bail granted by a federal high court, El-Zakzaky has been denied freedom since December 2015 and has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
However a high court in Kaduna state declined his bail application on November 7, 2018 with that of his wife, Zeenatu.
In the video trending online, Lai Muhammad asked not to be quoted before proceeding to say: “It costs the government about N3.5 million every month to feed him.
“Honestly, don’t quote me, but these are the facts.
“So please. We don’t want to inflame passion. The issue is a very sensitive matter. But that is the situation. The Islamic Movement of Nigeria are a different kettle of fish.”
The leader of the Shiite, IMN movement has been detained since December 2015 after soldiers clamped down on his supporters allegedly killing at least 347 of them. The army accused them of blocking a public road being used then by the Chief of Army Staff , Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai.
