The latest situation report on flooding from the National Emergency Management Agency put the number of deaths caused by large-scale floods in 12 states at 199.
The report indicated that a total of 176,299 persons had been displaced, while 826,403 people were affected in 87 local government areas.
The report, which was made available to Punch correspondent in Abuja on Thursday, further revealed that 109,820 displaced people were living with either their family, relatives or friends, adding that 1,036 individuals had been injured.
It said 17,816 houses had been destroyed or damaged by floods in various locations and 150,285 hectares of agricultural land, as well as 321 roads, had been destroyed or damaged.
NEMA said, “Since late August, heavy rains across Nigeria have caused large-scale flooding that has already impacted 826,403 people. However, numbers are expected to rise further as assessments are still ongoing in some states.
“In total, 87 LGAs across 10 states have been affected by severe flooding, while data is still being collated in two other states. On 17 September, NEMA declared a national disaster in the four worst-affected states (Anambra, Delta, Kogi and Niger) and is leading the overall national response.”
It added, “Five national and territorial Emergency Operating Centres have been activated, each covering between two and three states, to facilitate the response and collect information on critical gaps and needs.”
It said the EOCs were providing reports daily on the situation in the different states, adding that NEMA would continue to update the report as the situation evolved and assessments continued in the field.
The agency added, “Across all affected states, shelter, food, medicines, and mosquito nets, mats, hygiene kits, family kits remain priority needs. Responders are still requesting for speedboats to reach flooded areas and GPS for mapping.
“Light to moderate rains (up to 50mm) fell in the past 24 hours, primarily affecting Niger, Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, Adamawa, Ekiti, Kogi, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states. For the period of 20 to 23 of September, moderate rains (8 to 100mm) have affected the lower half of the country, primarily affecting Taraba State and southern coastal areas.”
