Food Security in Africa: BUK partners Food4WA

The Center for Drylands Agriculture (CDA) Bayero University Kano, BUK is collaborating with the Food for West Africa network (Food4WA), an alliance of African centers of excellence in agriculture to maximize the collective capabilities of Africa Centers of Excellence (ACE) to address development challenges and enhance food security through research, training and community engagement.

This was made known on Monday by the director, of the Center for Dryland Agriculture, Prof.  Jibrin Mohammed Jibrin during a press conference in Kano, ahead of the 4th international conference on drylands and Food4WA conference that will commence on Tuesday, at Bayero University Kano.

SOLACEBASE reports that the conference theme is “Ecosystem Restoration and Natural Resources Management: Exploring Opportunities for Food Security in the Drylands” and “Improving Climate-Resilient Agriculture in West Africa: Leveraging the Success of the Regional Africa Centers of Excellence.

According to him during the conference, 100 papers would be presented and bring together scientists, farmers, policymakers, CSOs, and the private sector from the United States, China, and Senegal among others to share their knowledge and experiences.

He added that there is a need for concerted and coordinated efforts toward addressing myriads of problems related to low agricultural productivity, climate change, high population pressure, and unsustainable land use practices in West and Central Africa.

“Problems can only be comprehensively addressed through generating, sharing, and applying knowledge and technology-based solutions, the conference on drylands and the Food4WA conference will provide a platform for such knowledge-sharing,‘’ Prof. Jibrin said.

He added that the center works in collaboration with various stakeholders to support adaptation to the changing environment in African drylands through training, research, and outreach.
