Group urges Kano assembly to expedite deposed Sanusi’s reinstatement as emir

A group known as Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano (the Kano Electorate), has urged the Kano State House of Assembly to take immediate action on the reinstatement of the deposed Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The group also called for the dissolution of the new emirates in the state.

The appeal was made by the chairman of the group, Najeeb Abdulqadir Salati, on Saturday, during a press conference in Kano.

Before now, the group had written a letter to the assembly seeking the review of the law establishing four additional emirates in Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi by the immediate-past administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Reacting to their request, the All Progressives Congress (APC) warned against any move to disrupt the current Emirates arrangement, as created by Ganduje, saying it might upset the peace of the ancient city.

But speaking with journalists on Saturday, Salati argued that reverting to a united Kano Emirate would lead to greater unity and progress for the people of Kano.

He also said the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II would demonstrate the commitment of the new government in Kano to the principles of justice and respect for the rule of law.

“His leadership is needed now more than ever as we strive to overcome the challenges facing our society and build a brighter future for the good people of Kano State and Nigeria at large.

“In a united voice, the concerned citizens of Kano State today are calling upon the Kano State House of Assembly to take immediate action on a recent letter we submitted to it.

This letter addresses both the contentious issue of the additional emirates created in 2019 and the removal of HRH Muhammad Sanusi II from his position as Emir of Kano.

“We stand today to emphasize the urgent importance of reviewing the decision to balkanize the Kano Emirate and appeal for the reinstatement of HRH Muhammad Sanusi II. This letter expresses deep concern regarding the split of the Kano emirate, a renowned traditional institution with over 1,000 years of history, and the removal of HRH Muhammad Sanusi II as the emir of Kano.

“We respectfully appeal to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf, to reconsider these actions. Specifically, we echo the call for a thorough review and subsequent repeal of the law that created the four additional emirates to facilitate an immediate reversion to the status quo.”

“We respectfully urge this esteemed assembly to investigate the removal of HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II from office and support his reinstatement in the spirit of fairness and rectitude to foster unity, peace, and stability within Kano State and its neighboring communities.”

“We implore the members of the Kano State House of Assembly to kindly consider this plea and take swift actions to preserve the revered ancient Kano Emirate,” the letter reads.
