ROUND UP: Here’s all you need to know about Copa America 2024

As the oldest national team tournament in the world, the Copa America carries a legacy of pride and prestige.

This year’s edition promises to be as thrilling as ever, with significant monetary rewards at stake.

Beyond the honour of becoming the best team on an entire continent, the champion of the 2024 Copa America will also secure a substantial financial windfall.

History 

First held in 1916, the Copa America began its 48th edition on June 20 and will play till July 14, 2024 in the United States. 

Sixteen teams will compete for the coveted title, including defending champions Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, and formidable sides such as Colombia, Chile, the USMNT, and Mexico.

This tournament stands out in a summer packed with global sports events, including the European Championship and the Olympic Games in Paris, ensuring the eyes of the sporting world will be fixed on the US.

Financial stakes

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has allocated a total of $72 million in prize money for the tournament.

Each of the 16 participating teams will receive $2 million simply for competing, with the financial rewards increasing as teams advance through the rounds.

The semi-finals will determine the top four teams, with those eliminated at this stage playing a third-place match where the winner earns $5 million and the loser takes home $4 million.

The runner-up of the Copa America 2024 will be awarded $7 million. However, the champion will claim a grand prize of $16 million.

This substantial sum will be distributed among players, coaching staff, and the national federation, providing a significant boost to the victorious team’s finances.

A battle for continental supremacy

While the financial rewards are considerable, the true allure of the Copa America lies in the pride of being crowned the best team in South America.

In a year when international football takes center stage, the competition will not only highlight the skills and talents of the participating teams but also cement the winner’s status in football history.
