I Am Not Aware Of Alleged Plan To Impeach Me – Kano Speaker

Kano State House of Assembly Speaker Kabir Alhassan Rurum  has denied knowledge of alleged move to impeach him and  six principal officers over investigation of governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on $5m bribery allegation.

An online newspaper , Daily Nigerian had reported that governor Abdullahi Ganduje had nocturnal  secret meeting on Monday night shortly after he arrived Kano from Abuja at 1:30am.

The paper quoted sources that the governor may only survive impeachment if the Speaker and other principal officers are removed from their posts.

Kabir Alhassan Rurum  in an interview with Solacebase on Tuesday said he was not aware of the alleged plans to remove him and other principal officers by the governor as he was informed by people who read the online story and several phone calls he has being receiving on the issue.

“Honestly the rumour came to me as a surprise but I am not scared of losing the seat of the Speaker so long as whatever I am doing is in line with the normal process of the House, “said Rurum.

“As a Speaker I was accused of bribery allegation and to clear my name , I had to resigned my position for eleven months and I was subsequently re-elected as a Speaker. I have believe in God for all my activities. “

When asked on whether the investigative committee would stop proceeding over the alleged move, the Speaker said the committee is almost concluding its assignment as the Chairman told journalists on Tuesday evening.

He expressed happiness with the openness of the committee sitting and the transparency that is commended by many.

The Speaker noted that the Assembly enjoy cordial relations with the executive.

“We don’t have any problem with the governor as we enjoy cordial relationship”

Solacebase recalled that a Kano High court on Monday directed the state House of Assembly investigative committee to stop investigation on the bribery allegation against the state governor, pending determination of a case filed before it.

The suit was filed by one Muhammad Zubair on behalf of Sustainable Democration of Nigeria.

However the investigative committee Chairman Baffa Baba Dagundi addressed a news conference on Tuesday saying that the order of the court did not directed them to stop the investigation but said that status quo should be maintain.

He noted that the committee will be attending the court on Monday November 12.
