ICPC advocates resuscitation of lost values of integrity, honesty to check corruption
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has advocated resuscitation of the lost values of integrity and honesty as a nation.
The commission said the value of yesteryears, of truthfulness, nationalism and respect for human dignity have been lost, hence the increasing corruption cases in the society.
ICPC Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye stated this on Tuesday in Kano at a one day stakeholders zonal dialogue on the National Ethics and Integrity Policy, North-West zone.
Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye was represented by ICPC board member, Justice Adamu Bello (rtd).
Solacebase reports that the stakeholders’ dialogue by ICPC in collaboration with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and the National Orientation Agency, on National Ethics and Integrity Policy approved by the Federal Executive Council August 17th, 2020 and launched by President Muhammadu Buhari on September 28th, 2020.

‘’It is a fact that Nigeria is not lacking in policies and laws aimed at curbing corruption and indiscipline. Perhaps what is lacking is implementation and effective enforcement, based on well – designed Standard Operational Procedure. This is the difference between National Ethics and Integrity Policy and previous similar policies that have gone moribund and obsolete, said Prof. Owasanoye.
In a remark, Director-General, National Orientation Agency Dr. Garba Abari said the agency is responsible for mobilizing the general public towards sensitizing and implementing government policies and program, hence educating Nigerians on the National Ethics and Integrity Policy document.
‘’ The document has been produced in the three major languages of Hausa, Yoruba and Ibo for better understanding and adaptation, Dr Garba Abari, represented by NOA Kano State Director, said.
He emphasized the need to develop attitudinal change and reversion to the nation’s old way of life honesty and a high sense of responsibility that discourage corruption.
Speaking on building a partnership for the promotion of the National Ethics and Integrity Policy, ICPC Director, Education and Public Enlightenment, Malam Baba Ashiru said there cannot be a success in achieving the goals of the document if there is no collaboration among the various stakeholders that consist of CSOs, Media, Religious organisations and Women and Youth groups.
Malam Ashiru highlights 7 core values of the policy that include, Human dignity, Voice and participation, Partrotism, Personal responsibility, Integrity, National unity and Professionalism.
On his part, Kano ICPC Commissioner, Barrister Ibrahim Kagara said the essence of the dialogue was to ensure a better understanding of the policy document and for stakeholders to key into adopting it as belonging to everybody so that corruption can be stopped from the grassroots.
Most of the participants drawn from Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Kano expressed delight on the dialogue which was an opportunity to talk on the document, promising to carry the message home.
