Insecurity: CSO challenges FG on security overhaul

Worried by raising cases of banditry, kidnapping and other security threat across the country, a non-governmental organization, Civil Society Countering Conflict Resolution in Nigeria CS-CRIN on Monday advocated total overhaul of the nation’s security architecture.

Solacebase reports that CS-CRIN recommendation came as the nation battles with the menace of insurgency attack and kidnapping of innocent residents along major highways in the country and the ambush of Presidential guards in Abuja on Monday.

Besides, the CS-CRIN raised alert of possible escalation of political violence and society unrest in Kano ahead of 2023 general elections in the state.

Addressing a news conference on Monday, CS-CRIN National Coordinator Mr Adeniyi Aremu explained that government must act fast on security devastation in the country to restore lost confidence in the constituted authority.

Adeniyi disclosed that the civil society group is working under a four years project on strengthening Community Engagement Towards Peace Building and Conflict Management in Kano.

The National Coordinator stressed that the project anchored on building peaceful resolution in conflict prone areas have engaged 120 peace advocates deployed to 10 local government areas to ensure peaceful cohesion.

He said the NGO is partnering with Kano state police command to build the capability of the volunteers in the area of community policing and strengthening their intelligent gathering to mitigate violence in the community.

” Our mission is to strengthening Community Engagement Towards Peace Building and Conflict Management and with funding support from European Union and Agents for Citizens-Driven Transformation EU/ACT, we have trained 120 volunteers and deployed them to 10 local government areas that include the eight metropolitan LGAs as well as Sumaila and Rogo local government areas.

” We also trained religious leaders and organization to use their platform to promote and preach peace to their followers. From findings and responses from the religious body, unemployment was identified as major bedrock to violence. We called the government to create enabling environment.

” Under the platform, the NGO is collaborating with Sports Without Borders Association, a sport NGO to facilitate and promote peace. In our collaboration with the NGO, we requested for land to build sporting facilitates for people with special needs. Our trust is the enhance peaceful atmosphere and unite the young people through sports”. Adeniyi said.
