Journalist launches book on pidgin English proverbs

From Muhammad Sulaiman

A book, ‘who no know go know’ authored by Kate Onah was launched on Tuesday, in Kano to promote the pidgin English language in the country.

SOLACEBASE reports that the author of the book, Kate Onah, popularly known as Omalicha, is an award winning Nigerian broadcast journalist, writer and media consultant.

The author in her opening remarks said that the idea behind ‘who no know go know’ book of pidgin English proverbs is to promote the language and reveal the meaning of some proverbs which are unknowingly used by many people.

“Pidgin English is now a Lingua franca. There are some proverbs in pidgin English used by public while they do not know the real meaning,’’ Onah said.

‘’So, the idea behind writing this book is to reveal the meaning of them and even more, as well as to promote the language which is part of our African culture.’’

Speaking on the book, Auwalu Durowaiye Herbert Abiodun, a security and safety expert and consultant, commended the book as one that should be promoted and encouraged by international cultural organisation due to how the book ‘brought to the fore the importance of our cultural identity’.

“The book has brought to the fore the importance and relevance of being real and proud of our cultural identity as obtained in several Eastern and Southern African countries and even faraway China, where social and cultural activities have continued to be reference point,” Durowaiye commended.
